The Departed (2006) - 4/5

The Departed (2006)

Incredible acting and characters. So many great performances.

I like the complicated "who's good? who's bad?", but they might have taken it a little too far. Still great.

SPOILERS:

As Costello said, "when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?", so by the end the question of "good and bad" might not be worth trying to answer.

One quick shot still has me wondering about something. When Madolyn moves in w/ Colin, he goes to put a box away. There's a quick shot of what appears to be a TV screen of a hand going to pick up a phone receiver. Right after that, Costello calls Colin. I don't think it was ever explained???

Hope and Glory (1987) - 3.5/5

Hope and Glory (1987)

A very good, dramatic movie focusing on a WWII experience that we haven't really seen before. It's not a war movie, but more a drama set during the war - a great angle for a story.

The characters are great (except maybe the sister, but she grew on me too) and the imagery is strong.

Ocean's Thirteen (2007) - 3.5/5

Ocean's Thirteen (2007)

This was good in most ways with good levels of intensity, spyishness, humor and action. Basically no love story which I didn't see as a lack - there was so much else going on, I didn't miss it. The relationships btwn the main characters more than make up for it.

In some ways I think this is a modern "spy" movie w/ no political motives. There's a lot of the same elements, but a more light-hearted motive and payoff.

Also, this movie doesn't make me feel guilty for pulling for criminals to "win."

SPOILERS:

A few drawbacks: the motivation for the whole operation was a little thin. Fortunately, they didn't spend too much time on it. Pacino was good as a bad guy, I didn't need any more reason to want to see him lose.

I wasn't sure really why Bernie Mac's character had to go w/ the domino thing and the scam to get him in was weak.

The underground drill was WAY too much to buy. How cd they pull that off AND buy, get, install, etc. a new whatever-$36million-part-that-broke and so-on.

There's lots of stuff that can be overlooked, but the above was a bit much.

Shrek the Third (2007) - 3/5

Shrek the Third (2007)

It was pretty good w/ some funny parts, but the story was a bit thin and overall I just wasn't that drawn in or made to care.

They have a lot working against them in that the originality of the anti-fairy tale is gone and they're trying to walk a fine line to attract adult and child audiences.

SPOILERS:

The best part, imo, is when the Gingerbread man's life flashes before his eyes.

Ringers: Lord of the Fans (2005) - 1/5

Ringers: Lord of the Fans (2005)

Very little new information and laughable "dramatizations" of the stereotypes from each decade and the fans. Those were so bad that they were probably the best part.

It was drawn out and w/ so much LOTR info out there, it just didn't have anything really new or interesting.

Everyone's Hero (2006) - 2.5/5

Everyone's Hero (2006)

We got this for our son and he isn't always that interested which makes us not all that interested.

It was a good, cute, simple story w/ decent moral content and imagination.

Nothing great, but nice and different than the normal Disxar stuff we're getting used to.

Spellbound (2002/I) - 3/5

Spellbound (2002/I)

I liked "Wordplay" (see recent post) more. This documentary focuses more on the people in the movie whereas "Wordplay" focuses on the game and object of their passion. Ironically, I think you get more of the people from "Wordplay" than this.

That cd be b/c it's about kids and some of the passion and meaning fall out of it and it comes close to just being about "spelling words." Also, the stakes are higher which can take some of the fun out of it ("Wordplay" is just about people enjoying puzzles, no stress or pressure... to me).

The kids are great, but either the filmmakers didn't capture them well or there just isn't a ton there yet. Also, it cd be b/c they focused on 8 kids. That's a lot. After a while, I got a few of them mixed up in my head.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) - 3.5/5

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

A fun movie though pretty dark. I wdn't consider it a "kid's" movie. Also, it moves farther from the first in the trilogy (see previous post) which was more fatasy/adventure and more into a moral delimma at times which makes it harder to enjoy "pirates" as fun and charming like Jack.

There's a lot going on, many storylines and plots and it's long all which make it hard to hold together, but they do a good job.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - 3.5/5

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

We've seen this one a few times, but apparently it's not in this blog. We actually watched both prequels this weekend and enjoy them both. I think seeing them close in time to each other, I prefer the first one b/c it has more of the magic of the Black Pearl and newness of pirates and mystery, etc.

I have to give credit still to the second one as it's only the first in a two-parter. I think it just took itself down a notch when I saw the sails on the Pearl patched up. The tattered sails in the first movie were just too good. :)

Wordplay (2006) - 3.5/5

Wordplay (2006)

Very fun and interesting and certainly made me want to play crossword puzzles. I'm always attracted to an area of interest that has a sense of 'community' which oddly ennough this seemed to have in the movie.

However, I think even in the movie they make it clear that this tends to be something you do alone. It's just great to see people sharing a common interest and passion for things in a social way. The talent show at the tournament says a lot too - there's more to these people and they accept each other very deeply.

As always, a documentary took a seeminly uninteresting premise and made it fun to watch.

Akeelah and the Bee (2006) - 3/5

Akeelah and the Bee (2006)

A bit sentimental, but good and enjoyable. A good simple story w/ deep characters and a good message that's doesn't hit you over the head w/ (too many) stereotypes and generalizations.

It's a good light version of many movies that maybe try too hard.

Chariots of Fire (1981) - 4/5

Chariots of Fire (1981)

Somewhat making up for "Reds" as far as 1981's reputation goes... except for the soundtrack (Age of Synth).

I think there's several messages you can take from this: determination pays off, stick to your convictions no matter what and you'll succeed, that's true for you is true for you, sincerity is paramount, etc.

Eric Liddell honored God and wound up winning. Harold Abrahams honored himself and wound up winning. Neither wd compromise, both were passionate. Good movie, confusing message... if any.

Reds (1981) - 1.5/5

Reds (1981)

One of the few movies I didn't even finish watching. Partially b/c it wasn't very good and partially b/c I had so much more to watch - loooooooooooooong movie.

Too bad. 1981 must have been a bad year for movies for this to get so many awards and nominations.

Spider-Man 3 (2007) - 3/5

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Good movie. I'm not a big fan of the past 2 so this being my favorite (or at least the flavor of the day) isn't saying too much.

There's some good aspects to this movie, but I think they were too ambitious w/ the characters and storylines. You forget about subplots b/c they are ignored for so long and some bridges are forced and very questionable (SPOILER: Why did the butler wait so long to say what he said?).

Monday, May 07, 2007

The Illusionist (2006) - 2/5

The Illusionist (2006)

What a disappointment. Ed Norton is one of my favorites and he was SO flat. The story is rather weak and tends to focus on the aspects of it that aren't that interesting. They basically ignore the love story which we're suppose to buy into... but when?

The 'reveal' is also quite disappointing and predictable.

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) - 4/5

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

Classic movie all around: war movie, romance, happy ending, etc. This is why we keep making movies about these things - we still remember how great they were back when it was original.

Monday, April 30, 2007

Raging Bull (1980) - 4/5

Raging Bull (1980)

De Niro shines as a pretty horrible character. Rage is right! This guy is determined to get everything he wants and destroy it too.

Cathy Moriarty is also great - so smooth.

It's very intense in and out of the ring. I can't say enough about how great De Niro is, of course.

City Lights (1931) - 4.5/5

City Lights (1931)

Very fun, cute movie. I liked the simple story and natural feeling situations that let Chaplin shine. What a master!

This movie is a classic's classic. It's nice to watch these scenes knowing this is the material we're always seeing duplicated (but never as well).

Thursday, April 26, 2007

One Night with the King (2006) - 2.5/5

One Night with the King (2006)

Pretty good production, but somewhat disappointing/mixed acting. They changed the story which is a big no-no in my opinion. Not that they necessarily changed the message, but I really wanted to see the story I know and love.

Also, they added some sub-plots which may have added depth, but it didn't really work for me - again that cd be just b/c it was different.

The book of Esther is short so maybe it doesn't require a full length feature to tell it all. That cd be why they added other story lines, etc. which, to me, distract from the story.

They did some things well, but overall I was disappointed so read that into my rating.

Beyond the Gates of Splendor (2002) - 4.5/5

Beyond the Gates of Splendor (2002)

I wanted to watch this after "End of the Spear" and I think it's much better. I tend to like the actual people telling the stories. Plus, the real locations, people, photos and film, etc. So great.

This has much more backstory and explinations of their ideas, intentions, mindsets and heart for what they were doing.

Blades of Glory (2007) - 4/5

Blades of Glory (2007)

Funny and good performances by Farrell and Heder. Great permise too.

For some reason, I was really distracted when I saw this movie so I can't seem to remember too much from it. I guess I can look forward to renting it.

End of the Spear (2005) - 3.5/5

End of the Spear (2005)

An important story told fairly well. Not a great movie, but it tells and good and important true story.

It wasn't so much about Jim Elliot like I expected, but others and the tribe and such.

I wd recommend "Beyond the Gates of Splendor" over this movie.

Monday, April 09, 2007

Factotum (2005) - 1/5

Factotum (2005)

Decently acted, but the story and characters are fairly weak. Not much to like here and little reason to try. It started a bit weak and got worse.

Facing the Giants (2006) - 5/5

Facing the Giants (2006)

This movie gets a very high rating for personal reasons. Like others, w/ such a low budget ($70k), it did a lot.

It's a bit cheesy, but for so many possible pitfalls and sensitive issues, there's a lot that cd go wrong. They navigated those well which is quite a feat.

I loved the message and they way it's told w/ focus on God, His word, prayer, trust, faith, etc.

Monday, March 26, 2007

"Extras" (2005) - 3.5/5

"Extras" (2005)

Not a "hilarious" show. Clever and original, but nothing incredible and kinda slow.

Also, it suffered from high expectations from me.

Chicken Little (2005) - 2.5/5

Chicken Little (2005)

Nothing wrong w/ this movie, but nothing great either.

Monday, March 19, 2007

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2000) - 4/5

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2000)

Good show, but I had high expectations. I felt like it was "Seinfeld" on cable, but not as good - possibly b/c being like "Seinfeld" made it unoriginal.

Also, I felt like most episodes were formulaic - he wd do something in the begining which wd set him up to screw things up and come back on him later.

He's kinda Jerry and George rolled into one, but w/o the full cast, it's weakened.

Anyway, it's good and I'm told the next few seasons really get strong, but I was let down a little.

Madagascar (2005) - 4/5

Madagascar (2005)

I really liked this movie. The overall story is decent and the characters are good, but the details and little jokes throughout the whole story cracked me up. I just really liked the detailed thought they put into the little actions and jokes and idiosyncrasies of everything: the personalities of the penguins, the mannerisms of the animals, the quick side jokes w/ the monkeys, etc.

So while this movie isn't like an 'instant classic', I had a lot of fun w/ it.

Igby Goes Down (2002) - 3.5/5

Igby Goes Down (2002)

I think I wd have liked this movie more if I were younger or more ideallistic or something. It reminded me a lot of "The Cather in the Rye." I read that when I was older and didn't like it that much - I just thought the kid was annoying, arrogant, selfish, judgemental and a baby... kinda like this movie.

However, in the second half of this movie, they dive deeper into his family and such and it gets better. The dynamic of his dad and brother and just where people start and wind up and how was interesting.

The acting, tone, etc. are all great and Kieran Culkin handles the lead very well. This movie has a lot going for it. I was probably meant to feel sorry for and sympathize w/ the lead more than thinking of him as a punk causing trouble around him, but...

Shopgirl (2005) - 3/5

Shopgirl (2005)

A good little story not trying to take on too much. What makes a relationship work? What makes a person happy? Why sd two people be together?

I love the pace of this movie. It cdn't be slower and more relaxing. Even the intense scenes are slow.

SPOILERS

I have to say that if I was suppose to buy into Mirabelle and Jeremy being together at the end, I don't think I can. I mean, at least, not buy into it and be satisfied w/ it. He just picked up a girl at her art show and slept w/ her soon before they're together. I'm not sure he's all that great of a guy. As for whether or not they are "right" for each other, that may be a separate question, but I think my feeling on it holds.

UPDATE: It seems Mirabelle is given the choice btwn 2 men. Neither, at first, can give her himself: one is self-absorbed and the other is emotionally closed off. However the second can give her other things like attention, gifts, etc. which are good but ultimately not enough.

Jeremy changes and eventually can give himself to her which, in movie reality, is love and is the 'right choice.'

I have to question if at any point either of them are right for her.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006) - 4/5

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

I felt this was an original idea for a story and it was well told and acted.

SPOILERS

It's hard to pin down exactly what the point was, but I'd consider that to be a good thing. Was it that we sdn't let "numbers" control our lives?

Harold's life is all about numbers: he works at the IRS and is OCD about counting everything and living life in a very calculated manner.

Once that's "broken" he starts changing how he lives and actually starts living his life. Then people are brought into his life. Finally, he's forced to living based on "the facts" and chooses to die for someone else. This time his "living by the numbers" is for a purpose and by choice in the "right way."

But that leaves out Karen Eiffel and too many other characters out of the base of the story. However, to some degree it includes those people in Harold's life: the baker, the professor and the friend.

Karen Eiffel's part in the story is too big to be left out.

I'll have to think about this one some more.

Lucky Number Slevin (2006) - 2/5

Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

Lots of big names, but Josh Hartnett pretty much cancels all that out.

I bet it was a good read, but the transition to the screen lost a lot. I'd say poor directing, but...???

What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? (2004) - 3.5/5

What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? (2004)

Thought provoking, but a pretty dangerous movie. They certainly take a lot of leaps in their arguments to try to make their points. A good bit of slight-of-hand.

They also hit a lot of topics, concepts, scientific area/theories/ideas, use a cute story, animation, etc. It's hard to focus on one thing and when you try they're already on another point and you've only had time to understand their argument (and not examine it) before they've moved on.

Unfortunately, this probably had the opposite effect on me than what might be intended - I believed it less than they probably wanted. While their spiritual conclusions might be whacko, I'd like to know if their neurology had any merit b/c that cd be pretty interesting.

I wd love to see/read a response to this movie from someone I knew I cd trust. :)

The credentials of the interviewees (which you don't see until the end) are impressive, but these days it's hard to trust college professors and Ph.D.s and such w/o knowing more about them.

The reviews on IMDB are pretty negative, but well worded and intelligent.

I wd have given it a higher rating b/c it's interesting, but it's dangerous.

Marche de l'empereur, La (2005) - 3.5/5

Marche de l'empereur, La (2005)

Good movie. They do a good job of taking a relatively simple story and making it interesting. They don't force any of the cuteness and don't hold back any/much of the tragedy.

Open Season (2006) - 2.5/5

Open Season (2006)

I can't really say too much about this. We watched it w/ our son and I was probably more interested in watching him than the movie. It definitely had some cute/funny parts, but over all I didn't think the story was that great... though I was distracted.

I was surprised to see (before it started) that it's rated PG. I think it deserved it b/c of the theme of hunting and all.

Anyway, it's decent, but there's better out there.

Just Like Heaven (2005) - 2/5

Just Like Heaven (2005)

Cute, but unoriginal, cliché, predictable, sappy, cheesy w/ sub-par acting, imo.

I get no joy in saying those things about it... kinda like watching the movie itself. :)

I thought this was "Far From Heaven" when I added it to my queue.

Jésus de Montréal (1989) - 4.5/5

Jésus de Montréal (1989)

Great film. Only slightly dated too.

The premise is an actor is hired to put on a Passion play for a Catholic church. The priest has little faith himself and gives the actor free reign to hire who he wants and make any necessary changes to bring the play up to date.

The actors eventually feel the work is very significant and important.

Warning: one small scene of nudity - you'll know when.

SPOILERS:

The priest is admittedly a "bad" priest, but believes "a bad priest is still a priest" and won't give up his position despite his failings and discontentment. He believes a person "should live happily as long as possible." His only conviction seems to be that the Church serves the emotional needs of people who can't afford psychoanalysis or drugs elsewhere.

He is the modern Pharisee for the most part.

The "Jesus" character first gathers his followers starting w/ a single mother serving in a soup kitchen. She agrees to follow/support him and gives him a place to stay since "the son of man has no place to lie his head." We find out she's the priests mistress (adulterer) too.

Next he gathers other followers who are a group of misfits for various reasons resembling Jesus' followers.

The play is quite liberal and questions many of the claims of Jesus' life. The priest is worried about what his superiors will think and ultimately they try to shut down the play though the audiences/critics love it.

The actors all finally feel they are working on something meaningful and are more passionate about their "church" of acting. This includes a scene w/ one follower trying out for a "beer" commercial (which cdn't have been more blatant talking about how society "worships" beer and physical beauty, etc., but still great, that was the point).

Their insistance that she take her clothes off is such an insult in the Jesus character's "temple" that he has to over turn the tables and cleanse the house including whipping the "officials" w/ a whip of cords.

They go on w/ the play, but it is disrupted by security during the crucifixtion and thru an accident, the cross is knocked over and "Jesus" is hurt and taken to the hospital. His believers are somewhat scattered and there's little help amoung "His people" (St. Mark's hospital).

He begins to feel better and leaves though he starts his descent into the lower realms and darkness mentioning being forsaken by his father. He preaches to those standing idle underground being watched over by their master (and popular actor on a dard billboard for perfume).

He collapses and again those around him all scatter except for the two women. This time he's taken by Jews (the Jewish hospital) who care for his dead body. Ultimately, thru his death, others around the world are given life: a heart to an American, eyes to an Italian, etc.

This description may make the movie sound heavy handed and obvious, but I think they make it work well. The characters are good and their transformation is passionate. Early in the movie their attitude is literally "que sera sera" and by the end they are determined to continue w/ the work, establish an institution in their leader's memory and keep it free from defilment and compromise (though it is led by a clearly superficial lawyer - so great).

There are so many good scenes and shots in this movie that I think I'd have to watch it a few times to pick up on even more. Like a scene where they are all eating on the mountain and try to feed the guard who comes up. Just a part of a larger scene, but the details are great: the movement in the scenes (going up and down especially: stairs, escalators, buildings, etc.).

The Station Agent (2003) - 4/5

The Station Agent (2003)

Some semi-spoilers mixed in...

There's a lot of imagery in this movie especially revolving around trains which is an easy tie in. Fin is very much like a train: he dresses 'old fashion' and in black, he smokes, walks train tracks, doesn't speak hardly at all, very isolated, alone, no emotion or desire for interaction, etc.

He's content to live in solitude and even desires it. However, Joe, by his nature, insists on becoming his friend. His life is marked by service and human contact: he works a hot dog/ice cream/coffee stand and does that to serve his father (he's serving to serve). He forces his way into Fin's life and forces Olivia to come along to.

Olivia creates and nurtures but her life is a (train) wreck. She wants to help and it seems to provide for Fin in a way she can't for her son who died a couple years before. She sees Fin as someone to fill this role in her life as her son.

Joe's excitement and Olivia's motherliness eventually brings Fin out of his shell and converts him from a 'train watcher' to a 'people watcher.' He starts wearing clothes w/ some color, being interested in others and eventually smiles and cracks a joke.

He opens up only to find he gets hurt like he always feared. The resolution is not overwhelming or overly sappy, but well done and simple.

The acting is spot-on and the characters come thru instantly even if you don't know it at the time.

Night at the Museum (2006) - 3/5

Night at the Museum (2006)

A good, light, fun movie that doesn't try to be too much. Owen Wilson stands out in a relatively small role. Robin Williams is pretty good too.

I think this movieis cute and wd probably be especially fun for kids, but I liked it too.

Thursday, February 08, 2007

Unknown (2006) - 2/5

Unknown (2006)

I wanted to like this movie b/c it has so many things that appeal to me: I hadn't heard of it, good actors that I like, independent, low budget (at least that look'n'feel) and you are lost w/ the characters and learn as they do.

While I think the acting was good, I didn't think the characters were fleshed out. It seemed like they tried, but I didn't buy it. Maybe b/c I cdn't rely on anything b/c their memories and development were questionable (more in spoilers).

The people in the warehouse seemed to be 'going thru the motions' and not really getting anywhere and the character development wasn't effective.

The outside plot was unclear and also felt like fluff or 'killing time' until they cd get to the end and resolve things.

There's a lot going for this, but ultimately I think it lacked heart and soul required for this kinda thing. Maybe it was the result of a quick shooting schedule since it is an indie type thing.

SPOILERS

By the end, there were too many twists piled up on top of each other in rapid succession that it kinda lost the effect. He's a good guy, no a bad guy, no an undercover cop, no a bad undercover cop, w/ a plot w/ the other guy's wife, no ultimate a good guy, huh?

Monday, February 05, 2007

Elizabethtown (2005) - 3/5

Elizabethtown (2005)

I heard this movie compared to "Garden State" and while I can see that, I think "Garden State" is considerably better. I think the tone is more consistent in "GS" and the acting is better also.

Orlando Bloom doesn't pull it off. I don't think he can 'do' emotion: the scenes requiring any type of bigger emotions from him fell pretty flat and akward.

It didn't seem like this movie cd decide if it wanted to be serious, funny, introspective, etc. In the end, that means it's none more often than not.

Kirsten Dunst was particularly good to me. I normally don't think too much of her, but she did a good job.

SPOILERS:

The best part of this movie was the last ~30 mins where he's driving across country w/ his dad's urn. The tone completely changes IMO and for the better. Invoking images of him w/ his dad and their love (which is missed for the rest of the movie not knowing what kind of relationship they had...which may be the point???) and the beauty of the time alone despite the death of one of them. :)

The 'fiasco' of the shoe isn't believable. No company wd put so much behind one person's creation who is just a guy w/a cubby hole of a desk. If they did, they wdn't have made it that far. Also, they wd have done test marketing, etc. It just distracted that it was so unbelievable.

Also, the mom's 'conversion' near the end from high-strung widow to practially stand-up comic was awkward.

The Aviator (2004) - 4/5

The Aviator (2004)

Great acting. Blanchett, Alda and DiCaprio are at their best in my opinion. Unfortunately, it's hard for me to see DiCaprio as anything other than a babyface, but he came close and everything else was very impressive: his expressions, stance and mannerisms, voice (though maybe a little thin), etc. He was as good as he cd be and much better than most.

I loved the way Scorsese modeled the filming of the periods as they wd have looked during those years. Some scenes have the 'off' coloring as it wd have been filmed back then. Great device.

I wdn't say this movie is very 'informative' or gives a lot of answers yet it isn't close to a documentary either. It's a great blend of truth and artistic interpretation/storytelling as a biopic probably sd be.

I'm intrigued by Hughes so I enjoyed it on that level too.

And while I'd love to learn more about what happened after the movies timeline, I've seen enough on it to know that we don't really know it all clearly. So I'm glad they didn't even get into it.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - 3/5

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Meryl Streep was great. Undeniable.

The story was fair and somewhat cliche and/or predictable though not done poorly.

The characters were good, but Streep really made the movie as good as it was going to be.

Crash (2004/I) - 3/5

Crash (2004/I)

I think my expectations were too high for this. So many people said it was great.

I think I see what they're doing here, but maybe it's my cynacism getting in the way. It seems like they are saying "good people can do bad things (Ryan Phillipe and others) and bad people can do good things (Matt Dillon and others)... and everyone's racist."

I'm not sure if that's the message or if there's a bigger message. I'm not saying I disagree w/ the message as it is, but I'm not blown away by it.

It was well done and compelling. It's a good film as a film. But as far as what I got out of it: 3.

Rocky II (1979) - 3/5

Rocky II (1979)

I have to say this movie was better in my memory than on DVD. :)

The story was thin and transparent. The acting was hard to watch in many parts b/c it was cliche though it might only seem that way now. The motivation, for me, wasn't really there.

They tried to establish that Rocky 'is a fighter' and that's what he does. But he wasn't into it w/o Adrian's backing. Seems like a contradiction a little. I know what they were doing, but still.

The fight was good, but not great. Nothing significant happened it seemed: no swelling, ribs cracking, etc. Just worn out and Rocky's heart pulled him up at the end (oops, spoiler).

I just didn't buy into the heart of the story which is ashame b/c I remembered really liking this one in the past. Probably b/c he wins (oops, spoiler).

I still liked it, but not as much as I remembered. I guess I sdn't watch 3 and 4 and don't have interested in 5.

Derailed (2005/I) - 3.5/5

Derailed (2005/I)

Good tension and characters. Just about everyone in this movie makes you feel uneasy/uncomfortable. Even the sick daughter just makes you feel uneasy.

It's nice that they didn't glamorize adultery. :)

SPOILERS:

Unfortunately, NGG (No Good Guys). Charles is the main character, but it's hard to sypathize w/him b/c he's trying to have an affair and lying to his family, etc.

Serenity (2005) - 4/5

Serenity (2005)

I really liked the series (last post) and enjoyed the movie too. I think the movie was a great extension of the series: similar, but bigger, answers, but not too much 'ending.' I hope there's more movies, but I don't feel there necessarily has to be... but it wd be nice.

I'm watching the commentary by writer/director Joss Whedon now which tells me that I'm really enjoying the story behind the story. There's a lot here for a sci-fi fan and just someone who enjoys a good success based on a long-shot story.

SPOILERS

I really don't try hard to find faults in this movie, but when Mal first shoots the Operative, he sd have done more to get rid of him. They don't say this, but I have to wonder if he didn't want him dead for some reason. The second time he has a chance at him, he doesn't take it again. I was disappointed in that, but I think he wanted him to follow so that he wd see the video.

They don't explain that and I'm not sure if I'm right or not. If I'm right, they're probably giving the audience too much credit to figure that out. I'm surprised I did - I'm sure I wdn't have if I didn't try since I was bothered by Mal leaving him basically unharmed. So much of this story has been well done that I assumed this was too so that's my explination.

"Firefly" (2002) (TV) - 4.5/5

"Firefly" (2002)

I really enjoyed this series and though I'm bummed it was cancelled a) it's nice to be able to see it all and have it contained and b) I probably wdn't have watched it otherwise.

I so like the idea of an underground series that had a loyal following and was made into a feature after being cancelled.

The characters and writing are very good and quite clever though not just for the sake of being clever. The bigger story is also good and I didn't get the feeling that they were just answering questions w/ more questions. Not that they had all the answers, but that the big questions weren't the main thing: the relationships, characters, individual episodes, etc. were just as important and the big picture.

So again, since my rating is based on how much I 'like' something, I gave it a high rating. Part of the reason I like it so much is b/c of the specifics: low budget, grassroots growth, underdog story, etc.

I also watched "Serenity" right after watching the series. Next post.

JFK (1991) - 3/5

JFK (1991)

This is a good film, but sdn't be taken as the truth or even close to it. This is the kinda thing Michael Moore sd be (and really is) doing: it's fiction based on and mixed with truth.

It makes for good drama and film, but dangerous if taken too literally.

Soon after watching this, we saw The Kennedy Assassination - Beyond Conspiracy which I felt dispelled a lot of the conspiracy aspects from JFK. Who knows what is true, but I think the two compliment each other in a sense. I just think JFK is somewhat dangerous. I've always thought this about Oliver Stone.

Narc (2002) - 3.5/5

Narc (2002)

Very powerful performances and story. Quite intense. I really enjoyed the 'ride' thru this and trying to figure out who is who and what and everything else. Quite confusing, but very satisfying too.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006) - 4/5

My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006)

A 4 may seem high for this movie. Especially since it seems to get such poor reviews/ratings other places. Maybe my expectations were low, but I really liked it.

It was clever, original, cute, funny and very fun! It was like they had an idea (what if a super hero was more like a normal person... or better yet, not that great of a person in some ways, but is still a super hero) and they made that movie. Moreover, they didn't stray from it and make that person learn a big lesson, save the world, become a better citizen, etc. Nope.

It was a bit predictable, but who cares? And most elements of the movie were sorta sub-par, but those things just aren't that important to this type of movie. They did a great job of focusing on the characters and the premise and all.

Mostly I'm proud of them for sticking to the premise and playing that out.

The Sentinel (2006) - 2.5/5

The Sentinel (2006)

Again a forgotten post... I don't remember it well and probably wdn't recommend it so it gets a 2.5 b/c I remember liking it ok, but nothing more than that.

Thank You for Smoking (2005) - 2/5

Thank You for Smoking (2005)

Unfortunately I accidentally posted a draft for this post on a different blog and just now realized it. I saw it several weeks ago and don't remember too much about it which makes me think "It must not have been that great and I probably wdn't recommend it." So I gave it a 2.

I remember thinking it was pretty clever, but also I'm no fan of propaganda in movies.

Primer (2004) - 4.5/5

Primer (2004)

I really liked this movie.

(UPDATE: I went back and up'ed my rating of this movie so the next couple of sentences were made when I had it lower)
I wanted to give it a 4/5 or higher, but it's tough to rationalize w/ the many problems...

Given the circumstances around making the movie, it sd get a 5/5 or something.

The film focuses too much on the science of the situation and leaves too little to the meat of the story. I felt confused by the story, not the science. What happened? Why?

UPDATE:
The reason I up'ed the rating was b/c after thinking about it and I want my ratings to be how much I "like" the movie. Not just technically or artistically or whatever, but what I think about it and all that that entails: fun, clever, etc. How much it appeals to me. I've been thinking and talking about this movie ever since I saw it. I immediately started the director's commentary after watching the movie and immediately started the cast/crew commentary after that (though I didn't finish it).

SPOILERS

What happened to Thomas Granger? The just left that.
UPDATE:
Later in the director commentary he explains they don't know. Their present selves don't know how he found out about the box and what he did exactly, etc. So we don't either.

Why was Aaron leaving?
UPDATE:
Too many doubles and complications. The wiki page explains a lot, but it took me a while to agree w/the whole 'doubles' part.

Wikipedia.org has a great page on it here. I'm not sure I cd get all that from the movie???

Friends with Money (2006) 1.5/5

Friends with Money (2006)

A non-story w/ great characters. A bad story told well. Depressing life situations for people who do it to themselves for the most part. Selfish, shallow people not being happy.

No ending at all which cd almost pass for being contemplative, but it's too much which just means they didn't have a good ending and just stopped to fake something powerful IMO.

Don't bother.

Heat (1995) - 3.5/5

Heat (1995)

Great acting and 'big' idea movie. The action is subtle and the relationships all around are tense.

I kept finding myself not knowing what I wanted to happen.

SPOILERS

Neil is ultimately able to walk away when he feels the heat, but it's not to save his own skin, but Eady's. It's a powerful statement on various levels.

However, it was unwise of him to make the side trip to risk it all. Not smart. And he sd have known that pulling the fire alarm wd attract a lot of attention. In some cases, that wd be fine (and the script called for it), but he sd have known the 'heat' wd come down.

Wednesday, December 27, 2006

Little Miss Sunshine (2006) - 3/5

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

I liked this movie, but I felt it was a bit thin.

SPOILERS

Each character has their own 'rejection':
the father: business
the grandfather: the retirement home, life and himself
the mother: her family
the son: society and eventually the Air Force Academy
the uncle: his boyfriend, society and himself
the daughter: potential rejection from others/society

They all feel that rejection and hate it and/or fight it. They all want to protect the daughter from the same, but realize (as in the Proust speech by the uncle) that it's the rejection that makes things great.

So they don't protect the daughter from rejection, but embrace their own rejection and join her in her's.

Good story, but an exaggerated and clumsy way to get there IMO. Still a decent movie.

Titanic (1997) - 4/5

Titanic (1997)

Good characters and good action/intensity.

The 'running through every hallway on every deck of the boat' during the second half got a little crazy, but the intensity was always there really.

It's probably b/c I'm getting older, but I'm having a harder and harder time w/ a couple of the cliche type ideas in movies like this:
- poor people are good, honest, fun and nice and rich people are evil.
- two people can meet, have feelings and fall in love and we sd want them to be together and it believe it's right w/in a couple hours to the extent that they are willing to give up everything and even die for one another.

This movie has flaws, but it's good.

Rocky Balboa (2006) - 4/5

Rocky Balboa (2006)

Given the history, they did a great job. It was quite a trip down memory lane for a lot of the story and I liked that.

I didn't think the 'goal' was as defined as I had liked. In the end, I was convinced it was a 'happy ending', but I wasn't exactly sure why.

SPOILERS

Rocky seemed to have issues w/ 'going toe-to-toe' and 'having a beast in the basement' and such that he needed to deal w/. I just didn't feel that it was clear that the fight wd deal w/ these things.

Also, they didn't deal w/ the whole issue of Rocky's eye problem and such that casued so many problems w/ him boxing in the past. I didn't mind at all that it was ignored.

Some Like It Hot (1959) - 3.5/5

Some Like It Hot (1959)

Another classic. Funny and original - still not copied much that I know of (not to the extent or as often as I wd expect given how good this movie is).

The story moves along well, but doesn't leave the characters behind.

Friday, December 15, 2006

Desk Set (1957) - 3/5

Desk Set (1957)

Good classic type movie. Good performances and interesting situations that still hold true today in a fashion.

The characters and time are great. Fun to watch.

Hepburn steal the show.

A note about my rating scale...

UPDATED (1.5.07): I wanted to change the slant of my ratings to be more like "how much I like this movie" as opposed to anything about a recommendation...

0-2 = Not worth seeing and probably not worth making notes for.
2.5 = I don't regret watching it, but I wdn't say it's worth your time.
3 = Pretty good, but there's still better stuff to watch.
3.5 = Decent movie. Might see it again.
4 = Good movie. I'd probably see it again. I like it.
4.5 = Really good, little things can't prevent a 5 so this cd be great.
5 = Dang!

Of course, the ratings are relative to what I'd expect/want from the movie. So while "Napoleon Dynamite" isn't the piece of film art that "Schindler's List" is, I can still give it just as good of a rating.

I don't have a checklist or equation to come up w/ the rating so one day I might give a movie a 3 where the next day I wd have given it a 4. I'm swayed by mood and who-knows-what. So my ratings might seem strange or inconsistent at times??? I guess I cd review them later and change my mind, but I don't intend to.

I wd change to 1-10, but it's too late now. That wd make searches easier since as of now if you search for "5/5" you'll also find "1.5/5" and the other "x.5/5" movies. Oh, well.

Deja Vu (2006) - 3.5/5

Deja Vu (2006)

A fun, intense thriller w/ some sci-fi thrown in there. You can't think too much during this, but there's no need to. It keeps things moving and intense most of the time. Just go along w/ the premise of everything and you'll be fine.

It's fairly dark too, but you secure w/ Doug Carlin taking command.

I think this movie was well done all around for the most part. I think the best part though is the maintained level of intensity for so long.

Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982) - 3.5/5

Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

Such a perfect continuation of the show as far as the story goes. The whole theme of Kirk getting old wasn't too helpful to me, but I believe the movie certainly needed more than just an extended ST episode story.

I think I appreciated it more now than in past years. I liked the tie-in's from "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few... or the one." But also the ideas of ego from where Spock insists Kirk take command and that he has no ego to bruise. As opposed to Khan which had so much ego he it eventually cost him his life and the lives of those around him.

A lot of it is dated, but that's a given.

Also, Shatner's acting is... ya know.

It's clearly made in the early '80's so take that into consideration. :)

Click (2006/I) - 4.5/5

Click (2006/I)

This is a very touching and moving movie to me. Maybe b/c it's an idea that's close to my heart of not wanting to waste a minute (though I don't consider staring at the wall or other such 'unproductive' activities necessarily a waste if done properly and chosen for purpose).

It's powerful for me to see someone miss out on such important things as your kids lives.

I think they do a great job of building the story and intensity and consequences of his choices throughout the movie.

SPOILERS:

I felt the end was really powerful. I'd hoped he wd have said to his son either at his wedding or later at the hospital "You're fired." to make a point.

Also, I felt the ending after the 'reveal' was too long - I felt it lost the emotional steam it built up from earlier. I think they sd have just had him go home, grab his family and tell them he quit his job or something. No need for details really. I guess they felt they needed to lighten the mood at the end, but I wish I had been left/dropped w/ the feeling before he woke up. And the remote from Morty at the end wasn't necessary either.

Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) - 3.5/5

Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)

Such a fun movie and it really shows Hanks and his 'fun' best to me. He's great in "Forrest Gump" of course, but this, to me, is when he really settled in to a great style.

Meg Ryan is great too in all her roles in this.

I love this...

Luggage Salesman: This is our premier steamer trunk, it's all handmade, only the finest materials. It's even watertight, tight as a drum. If I had the need, and the wherewithal, Mr. Banks, this would be my trunk of choice.
Joe Banks: I'll take four of them.
Luggage Salesman: May you live to be a thousand years old, sir.

Reservoir Dogs (1992) - 4/5

Reservoir Dogs (1992)

A great movie that started a great trend and career of Quentin Tarantino.

I'm still left w/ the question of: Who shot Nice Guy Eddie Cabot?

If you haven't seen it and that's a spoiler, you probably aren't going to see it.

Saturday, December 02, 2006

The Da Vinci Code (2006) - 2/5

The Da Vinci Code (2006)

Thin acting and a tough adaptation from the book. The theology is garbage, but the book does a decent job of making it a fun read. The movie only has time for the 'story' and such so it loses a lot.

A disappointment from Hanks and Howard.

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

Strangers with Candy (2005) - 1.5/5

Strangers with Candy (2005)

Pretty funny show, but weak movie. The story was very thin (at least on the show the overall story had a pretty funny premise).

It just felt like a 20 min show stretched over 90 mins w/ little more to it.

Kicking & Screaming (2005) - 2/5

Kicking & Screaming (2005)

Pretty much a let-down. Will Farrell is one of the funniest people IMO. However, playing a less silly character is harder for him to pull off. The silliness doesn't play as well and there isn't much else.

The story was predictable as you wd... predict, but I expected that.

There was a few good spots, but overall it's not worth it.

Tuesday, November 28, 2006

Over the Hedge (2006) - 4/5

Over the Hedge (2006)

Very cute and funny animated movie. A fairly moral and not too over-the-top environmental message too.

We're getting farther and farther away from a Disney-only animated movie world and starting to see more and more styles. I think "The Incredibles" might have been the biggest leap up to it's time.

Now we're seeing that type of jump in the animal animation world.

Anyway, this is pretty funny, very cute and quite clever in a lot of ways.

NOTE: This was the first movie my son ever watched w/ us. We hadn't tried before and were surprised he sat thru the whole thing.

Monster House (2006) - 3.5/5

Monster House (2006)

Good animation and very modern, technical technique. The story isn't the greatest, but that's not the point IMO. The kids are really good and funny characters.

They are CGI'ed over live-action acting which has to get a new name for that type of animation probably. It makes the action look more 'real' which isn't always the goal of course.

SPOILER:

Unfortunately I sorta guessed that Nebbercracker was trying to protect the kids, but I didn't know why. The idea that the woman was somehow joined to the house after she dies was a bit weak to me, but no biggie.

Miller's Crossing (1990) - 4.5/5

Miller's Crossing (1990)

Probably my favorite Cohen Brothers movie. The dialogue is so crazy rich I cd just read the thing. I use subtitles to make sure I don't miss anything and it's worth it.

The acting is right on and the camera work is pratically perfection.

This is a piece of art on film.

NOTE: My uncle is an extra in this movie. My dad has seen him in it, but I haven't. I usually forget to look for him. Apparently they pulled him out of the crowd to do a bit more in some scene that was later cut.

Monday, November 27, 2006

Casino Royale (1967) - 1.5/5

Casino Royale (1967)

Weak. Not a good spy movie and not a good spoof. Maybe in '67 it was better, but by today's standards, it doesn't hold up.

I'd seen it about 10 years ago, but didn't remember much.

Not much to say - don't bother.

Casino Royale (2006) - 3.5/5

Casino Royale (2006)

I felt the mood/feel of this movie was great: dark and tense. However, I felt the story was a bit thin and the action a bit small-scale.

I really wanted to like this one a lot and thought it had a lot going for it, but also some faults too.

The characters were pretty good, but...

SPOILERS:

Action - I felt it was too localized. The first action sequence of him chasing that guy. Who was he? Why did he want him? What was the point? I wasn't that tied into the action b/c I didn't know what the goal was and why. I felt most of the action was this way.

Characters - They were pretty good, but it always bothers me when they play cat-and-mouse w/ the villian. He's the bad guy, no she is, no this other guy new to the whole story is, wait...

Monday, November 13, 2006

Elf (2003) - 4.5/5

Elf (2003) As far as Christmas movies go, this one is a modern classic imo. It's irreverent and such which takes it out of a league of "It's a Wonderful Life", but it marries modern humor and style w/ a good, warm fuzzy making movie.

Friday, November 10, 2006

The Postman (1997) - 2.5/5

The Postman (1997)

...but a 4.5/5 on the cheese scale.

I liked the story, but I thought it was poorly told and acted. It felt rather low-budget too.

I thought there were various plot holes and such, but I won't bother going into remembering them.

SPOILERS:

I never really bought into the Postman being the Postman. I never believed he really cared. I always felt he was just a regular guy using something to get by. He was bold in his lie which also made me think he wasn't the caring type.

Friday, November 03, 2006

K-PAX (2001) - 3/5

K-PAX (2001)

It's a good movie trying maybe to be too much. The acting is good and the premise is interesting, but I didn't feel it really went anywhere. Also, I didn't feel like they tied the 'discovery' (of the lesson) into the other characters well enough.

So they set us up well and sorta left us hanging.

SPOILERS:

IMO, he's from K-Pax. He knew too much science, disappeared from the institution for a while, Bess was missing at the end, he was 'in character' even when hypnotized, etc. Hard to say, but that's what I'd have to guess. However, they clearly left it open for a reason so figuring out for sure isn't necessary to me.

Thursday, November 02, 2006

Mission: Impossible III (2006) - 3.5/5

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Great job of making it dramatic and not just action. The action is good, the characters are good, the drama is very good.

However, it has become a 'James Bond' type franchise - it's all about Ethan Hunt. I'm not sure if the TV show was like that, but I think not.

I'm glad to see they turned from the route MI2 was going.

Young Frankenstein (1974) - 4.5/5

Young Frankenstein (1974)

I appreciate this much more the older I get. Very funny. Some of it's corny, but that's the point in a lot of ways.

I grew up watching Gene Wilder so I don't think I saw the genious at the time. Also, he wrote this movie for the most part so he gets most of the credit (as opposed to Mel Brooks) in my opinion.

Great scenes and quote. Just hillarious.

Monday, October 30, 2006

The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980) - 3/5

The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)

This was creative and entertaining and certainly original. I remember seeing at least part of it when I was a teenager and thought it was ok. A lot of people talked about how funny it was and I thought I must have missed something. I guess I still do.

It's ok, but I wdn't say it's super special. It's interesting and good for it's time and, again, original which goes a long way, but not really far enough.

Rumor Has It... (2005) - 3.5/5

Rumor Has It... (2005)

I think this movie respected and blended well w/ "The Graduate." They were wise to explain that the book and movie based on the rumored story were close approximations so any variation cd be understood.

I believe the discovery of the situation was good and worked well. I had a lot of fun during the first have discovering w/ the characters what the reality was.

The second half wasn't quite as good. The discovery was gone and some events seemed inconsistent w/ the situation and characters.

SPOILERS:

I liked the early scene of Sarah explaining to her g'ma that she didn't want a normal like. I felt that naturally paralleled Benjamin's scene in "The Graduate" when he tells his parents he wants his life to be "different."

Also, the Casablanca night party in the movie told a bit about how Beau (like Ric), was in love w/ another man's woman, sdn't have her, shares her, is hurt and out for himself in most ways, but will need to sacrifice.

Shirley MacLaine was really good. That was going to be hard to pull off and cd have sunk it all, but she did great.

The late scene of Sarah going back to Jeff was awesome. It's rare to see a movie treat love realistically. This came about as close as you cd:

"I didn't come here to tell you that I can't live without you. I can live without you. I just don't want to."

The Break-Up (2006) - 1/5

The Break-Up (2006)

A somewhat dumb or at least overplayed premise about a couple that sdn't be together. She wants to make him jealous enough to change his ways by breaking up w/ him. Who's worse?

The situations are under played and fall short of potential. They pass up oppurtunities to make something actually funny out of a lot of scenes.

It's a poorly written, poorly directed weak story.

There are a few moments that are ok, but there's so much otherwise falling short that the whole is pretty bad.

The Matrix (1999) - 5/5

The Matrix (1999)

What can be said. Greatness.

V for Vendetta (2005) - 4/5

V for Vendetta (2005)

Like some others, I think this movie is probably better than I think. There's a lot to the story and subtle plotlines and such.

The ideas of freedom and causes are dramatically played out.

The feel and tone of the movie was right-on and the acting was very well done too.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) - 2.5/5

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Nothing great. Too many characters to really develop them all. Some w/ only a scene or 2. The action is forgettable (I say that b/c I can't remember it).

The Fountainhead (1949) - 4/5

The Fountainhead (1949)

Very interesting and compelling story. The acting was great too - it felt a lot like that time which was cool.

I heard Ayn Rand agreed to write the screenplay w/ the condition that not a word be changed. That's very in line w/ the story itself.

One of the best scenes is when Roark agrees to design the project for Keating not for credit, payment or satisfaction, but for "the work." That was the point: doing the work he loved.

Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) - 3.5/5

Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970)

This was an interesting look from both sides of the attack on Pearl Harbor. I can't say how accurate it was, but it certainly made me wonder and question a lot of the things that happened and how they happened.

I just hope we learned a lot from this. I fear we haven't and what we did learn may have been forgotten or lost over time and turnover.

Æon Flux (2005) - 1/5

Æon Flux (2005)

I wanted to like this movie. I heard it was and believed it, but hoped somehow I'd enjoy it. It was watchable, but painful.

I think this is what you'd get if you gave a 14 year-old boy millions of dollars to make a sci-fi movie: he gets everything he wants and it's no good - skimpy, tight close, lots of inexplicable gadgets and weapons, weird places and unnecessary effects, plenty of action with way too much wire-work, etc.

The premis is about the only good thing here, but if I thought about it for any length of time, I'm afraid that might sink too???

I believe there was an animated series this was based on. That cd be the problem - they tried to make it too much like the series and too few people are familiar w/ it???

Anyway, it's not worth it. Too bad.

The Great Escape (1963) - 4.5/5

The Great Escape (1963)

Probably my favorite WWII movie... at least that I can think of at the moment. I really enjoy the vast cast of characters and boldness in them.

They mix humor and serious tones well.

I can't say how accurate it is to the true story, but it's enjoyable and somehow encouraging.

Four Brothers (2005) - 2.5/5

Four Brothers (2005)

Not the greatest story, but basic enough to frame a movie. I think the acting is what broke this one for me. I don't know if I ever was able to suspend my disbelief and I really don't have a problem with that normally.

The plot actually gets fairly confusing about the murder of the mother, motive, who, etc. but not really in an interesting way - just a little confusing. Do I want them to kill that guy?

Decent entertainment, but nothing memorable.

Failure to Launch (2006) - 2.5/5

Failure to Launch (2006)

Good entertainment, but largely forgettable. Everyone did a decent job. Terry Bradshaw and Kathy Bates were probably the highlights.

I think the failing point in this movie was that I didn't really care about the characters too much. The comedy was hit-and-miss. The slapstick parts were mostly miss - at least Matthew's were miss.

The final scene was enough to bring this movie down a full point in my rating. Yow - bad.

Get Carter (2000) - 3.5/5

Get Carter (2000)

Probably my favorite Stallone work in years if not decades. He does a great job. Unfortunately it's in a similar vein as the past, but with some depth this time.

The story was good, but dragged long a bit at times.

I read that Michael Caine orginally was only in one or two scenes, but tested well with audiences and they extended his role. However, it wasn't enough to develop his character to where it needed to be.

Alan Cumming was a disappointment.

I think what made this movie good was Stallone's character - the development and the empathetic situation.

Henry V (1989) - 4/5

Henry V (1989)

Despite the strong period environment, I think this makes Shakespeare pretty attainable to the viewer. The acting is very good and the action is fairly intense. The St. Crispin's Day speech is the highlight in my opinion.

The relationships are a strong piece of this film. They can be confusing, but can also be powerful how the king can seemingly turn on his personal friends for the sake of the country... or himself... or right... ?

Apocalypse Now (1979) - 4/5

Apocalypse Now (1979)

I have to say as great as this movie is as many things, I don't think I "get it." What is the message? That the war was wrong? unwinnable? That we reward some insanity and punish others that don't follow orders?

It's a complex movie that moves well and is theatrical in many good ways. As you go deeper into the heart of darkness, you are swallowed up by darkness and may become the darkness yourself. Is that the message?

The acting was great. The artistry of the film was wonderful. The oasis of the French plantation was a little confusing, but well done. I'm just not sure that fit very well.

I think I need to read a good analysis on this movie to get it.

16 Blocks (2006) - 3/5

16 Blocks (2006)

A decent movie. Not much of a vehicle for Bruce Willis as an aged cop. Nothing too surprising or interesting, but an entertaining movie w/ somewhat of a story/message.

It's fine, but doens't stand out.

Shadowlands (1993) - 4/5

Shadowlands (1993)

I thought this movie was good but not so much as a movie as a message.

I loved how they didn't play up the big points of the movie to make them stumbling blocks to enjoying it. While it might not be a completely accurate, it's a good portrayal of a man, his relationships, pain and change thru it all.

They seem to start an early thread about 'magic' which I seemed to lose after a while. I'm not sure if they meant to maintain that or not???

The main theological point o by C.S. Lewis in the movie is that 'suffering is God's megaphone to a deaf world.' In the movie, that starts with the death of his mother at a young age. Later it's the death of his wife.

He explains that twice in life he's been hit by this pain:

Twice in that life I've been given the choice: as a boy and as a man. The boy chose safety, the man chooses suffering. The pain now is part of the happiness then. That's the deal.

So the movie presents him as hiding in his comfortable world hidden from pain and question. Pain finds him and he learns and embraces it.

I also like the part where he says he's not looking anymore. He's happy w/ the way things are - no longer living in the shadows where the sun shines always around the bend.

However, life doesn't stop. Pain finds you (See "The Village" for another view of this theme).

Good movie. Very touching on the part of the adults and Douglas, Joy's son.

Garden State (2004) - 4.5/5

Garden State (2004)

I really like this movie. It's extremely powerful and full of rich, emotional images.

I'm suspicious that some of the images are just that - images that are powerful even if you don't know what they mean. Even they don't really mean too much w/in the story.

I read that Zach Braff wrote most of it in college which explains a lot to me. Also, that he wrote it over time which tells me about the imagery - it makes me think he wrote down some powerful image ideas which he fit into the movie.

It's a genius story of a guy realizing his life is passing him by. He's waiting for something and realizes life is happening in the meantime.

SPOILERS:

I so wished, wanted, hoped for and expected a scene w/ Zach Braff at the mother's grave w/ him somewhat mimicing the speech Natalie Portman's character gave to her dead hamster, Jelly.

She says something like "Jelly, you were a good pet. I'm sorry I forgot to take the wheel out. Good bye. I hope you liked me."

So he wd say something like "Mom, you were a good mother. I'm sorry I pushed you. Good bye. I hope you liked me."

Invincible (2006) - 3/5

Invincible (2006)

It's a predictable, feel-good movie. It's reminiscent of "Rockstar" also with Mark Wahlberg. The 'based on a real story' factor adds a lot and it's a good movie, but it's pretty much what you expect.

One sorta strange thing about it is that Mark Walhberg's acting is very subtle. He doesn't overdo it which is nice - he doesn't get in the way of the story.
