High Fidelity (2000) - 3.5/5

High Fidelity (2000) - 3.5/5

It's hard to give this movie one rating b/c different parts/aspects of it are so different.

I think the worst thing is Cusack's acting. I just think he felt so fake like they did it in one take and it didn't feel right. It's like just saying "woo hoo." isn't really good acting for excitement.

The rest of the movie is "mixed" to me - some good scenes, some bad. But the "proposal" conversation was great about his "fantasies" and how he's tired of them. Good stuff.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2000) - 4/5

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" (2000)

Good show, but I had high expectations. I felt like it was "Seinfeld" on cable, but not as good - possibly b/c being like "Seinfeld" made it unoriginal.

Also, I felt like most episodes were formulaic - he wd do something in the begining which wd set him up to screw things up and come back on him later.

He's kinda Jerry and George rolled into one, but w/o the full cast, it's weakened.

Anyway, it's good and I'm told the next few seasons really get strong, but I was let down a little.

The Emperor's New Groove (2000) - 3.5/5

The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

Next: "Hellboy" (2004

Funny and clever w/ some good humor that's funny to kids and adults. I wdn't say it stands out in any one area, but it's just a fun little movie.

Get Carter (2000) - 3.5/5

Get Carter (2000)

Probably my favorite Stallone work in years if not decades. He does a great job. Unfortunately it's in a similar vein as the past, but with some depth this time.

The story was good, but dragged long a bit at times.

I read that Michael Caine orginally was only in one or two scenes, but tested well with audiences and they extended his role. However, it wasn't enough to develop his character to where it needed to be.

Alan Cumming was a disappointment.

I think what made this movie good was Stallone's character - the development and the empathetic situation.

Big Momma's House (2000) - 3/5

Big Momma's House (2000)

Funny and a decent story.

I noticed a similarity btwn this and "Diary of a Mad, Black Woman" in that it also had a 'silly' character (both heavy black women played by men), dark storyline and significant Christian presences (more cultural than spiritual).

I started thinking about other comedies and if they had similarities. I figured I cd find the silly/comedy , but not the Christian.

The first one I thought of was "Fletch" - silly characters/comedy, but a serious story of drugs/murder.

Then I went extreme: "Dumb and Dumber" - same: silly characters/comedy, but serious story of kidnapping.

State and Main (2000) - 4/5

State and Main (2000) - well done. Well written and clever. I wonder just how clever it really is.

Like when the director makes the girl take her shirt off and you don't see anything except his (lack of) reaction. Also, the name "State and Main" how it relates to the movie w/in the movie.

It's about purity. The characters seem to be personifications of character traits almost.

Strong dialogue. Great characters. Excellent story.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

Next: The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

A bit of a disappointment and probably more so the more times I see it. Jar-Jar is just annoying as are most of the alien life-forms. I've never really liked the make-up job of Darth Maul - looks like a guy in make-up.

There's some cool things, but not enough.
